LATE SCHOOL START

| April 15, 2010 9:00 PM

Why does the school district decide to make changes before they try something new? And why are the parents the last ones to find out about these changes? But most importantly, why do we have to find out by reading them in the local newspaper?

My child will be a new student to the Moses Lake School District for the 2010-2011 school year. I went to register her on April 13, 2010. At the time of registration, I was not informed about the time change. I woke at 10 a.m. and my husband is in the hospitality business, so he doesn’t usually have a set time to go in to work. So that means I will have to be the one that has to make sure she gets on the bus on time.

The teachers decided that it would be better for the student’s to start later in the morning so it gives them (the teacher’s) more time to “collaborate.” Why does it have to inconvenience everyone so the teacher’s get more time to “collaborate?” Isn’t that the reason why they get together during the summer to come up with a curriculum? Why can’t they get together during the summer to figure everything out and call it “collaborating,” instead of taking so many days off for ridiculous things they need to do instead of them doing them before the school year begins? Not to mention what is going to happen when the winter rolls around and the kids are going in later to school. That will make them get home just about the time it gets dark. I sincerely am very unhappy with the situation.
