Some of the sites that draw nature lovers to California
(ARA) - When you think of California, what's the first thing to come to mind? Most people would say movie stars and Disneyland, but ask any nature lover and they'll tell you California's true charm is in its unique landscape.
Northern California is home to the nation's most majestic old growth forests and some beautiful waterfalls. The Southern part of the state boasts awesome rock formations and shifting sand dunes. And it almost goes without saying that the state's entire coastline is a true American treasure.
Because the state is so large, stretching nearly 800 miles from end to end, it would be a good idea to focus your attention on a particular region rather than trying to visit natural wonders spread throughout the entire state.
* Northern California
If you are interested in exploring the Northern part of the state, make one of the San Francisco hotels your home base, and spend your days exploring the landscape.
If you want to stay close to the city, check out Pier 39, famous for attracting sea lions. There's also plenty to see in Golden Gate Park, which covers more than 1,000 acres. The park is a patchwork of woods, trails and lakes, and even home to a herd of buffalo.
For those willing to drive a bit, two national parks worth checking out are just a few hours drive away. Redwood National Park features acres of massive redwood trees, some up to 350 feet tall. Yosemite National Park also has large trees, plus three of the ten tallest waterfalls on earth.
* Southern California
If you're more interested in exploring California's beaches and desert climate, check into one of the San Diego hotels. The area has more than 30 public beaches. Many feature rocky coastline, tide pools filled with sea creatures and huge waves to play in or surf. If you're lucky, you may even see a pod of whales splashing offshore.
Head inland to explore the desert. Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, known for its kaleidoscope of color during the spring wildflower season, is just a two hour drive away and Joshua Tree National Park, long considered one of the world's most incredible natural wonders, is just a little further. The park features beautiful groves of Joshua trees, awesome rock formations and ancient Native American petroglyphs.
