SCHOOL CAMERA

| September 10, 2009 9:00 PM

How will a picture of a license plate in a short span at Hunter Place protect our children? A police car will stop a speeder, but the click of a camera makes some Australians rich and leaves the car speeding.

I doubt that most people speeding in the school zone are flaunting the law, but just don’t realize they’re breaking it.

The school zone on Pioneer way is very inadequately marked. There are School Zone When Flashing signs along the way, but what’s flashing?

There are one sided flashing lights as you enter the school zone both directions and one flashing light hanging in the middle of the very long school zone.

The high flashing light in the middle of the school zone is competing for the attention of drivers with four lanes of traffic, businesses with traffic turning in and out, traffic lights and periodic jaywalkers darting out into the street to cross.

“From the time you start under the flashing light in the middle of the school zone until it becomes visible in your rear view mirror again, vying for the above attention, there is no indication that you’re in a school zone.”

The money spent on the cameras would have been far better spent making the two school zone entry flashing lights flash in both directions. Double faced flashing lights or revolving lights on top of the School Zone When Flashing signs toward the center of the zone and on each side of the street would be more visible to drivers.

Nope, I didn’t get my picture taken, I’m just concerned for the safety of the kids.
