Watercooler talk

| October 29, 2009 9:00 PM

Lately there is a lot of talk about politics, government and a number of other topics.

Numerous people are blogging their opinions online at www.columbiabasinherald.com.

If you want to start a topic for online blogging, send us a letter to the editor at editor@?columbiabasinherald.com.

Here are some excerpts from recent blogs:

Big business

Others wrote: “Anyone hear about the Target store wanting to build a new store, but the city wanted them to remodel the old K-Mart building instead, when it would cost Target more to remodel than to build something new? It is my understanding that they even bought land to build on but the city manager was too unreasonable for them to deal with. Target said they would never come back until he was gone. Now, if this is fact, then “JUST THE FACTS” needs to come up with something else. If this is untrue, I would like to know how this elaborate story ever got started and why. Many of us have heard that Applebees, Wendy’s, Red Robin, Fred Meyer, Costco, and others wanted to come here but were snubbed by our city or whoever. Where do these stories come from if they aren’t true? Fill me in, please. I’ve heard them for years. “

Mr. Obvious wrote: “The city cannot force a company to use an old building. If they bought land, they get to use it. That is the silliest thing I have read. These rumors come from people who do not understand some of the basics of business and want to attack the existing city council. If a business wants to build in a town, the city has little ability to stop it. (Google the attempt of Chelan to stop Walmart.) I think if you look at how fast the city annexed in REC and the auto dealers on Frontage Road, you would see the existing city council and officials drool at the chance for tax dollars. They are greedy for business tax dollars. So why would they push businesses away? ‘They are protecting small shops owned by friends.’ Chelan tried to protect local small stores too and the courts (following the law) said they couldn’t. The entire decision is up to the people with the millions of dollars needed to build. Lowe’s is here and didn’t have a fight. Why is that different from Target? The real reasons are not really known to us, but if there is not enough people or money in an area, why should large businesses invest millions to build a store? Especially when so many bloggers keep claiming they will drive to Wenatchee, Spokane and Tri-Cities to use their stores there? Your driving saves them from building.”

Grant County prosecutor election

Harold wrote: “(Another blogger) is wrong and we don’t need an outsider telling us what is right for Grant County. Life-long residents only want Lin, who knows how to be our prosecutor. Also please support the Tea Party and Ron Paul.”

Bob wrote: “Harold is right, We don’t need an outsider from Pullman telling us what is right for Grant County. Don’t vote for Lin.”

Amused wrote: “The loser in all of this is the people of Grant County. We are the ones that are going to have to pay all of this money. If Angus is elected God help us all.”

Pedro wrote: “The winner will be the people of Grant County. We’ll have elected Angus Lee.”

Voting

Dan wrote: “Some people should vote. As the last election result proves, the majority seems too interested in getting something free from the goobermint, and so votes an obvious, proven and committed socialist into power. Next time, you folks, and you know who you are, should just stay home, watch Oprah and do a little less damage.”

Hover desks

Matthew Weaver wrote: “‘Mr. Weaver is still waiting for his hover desk.’ You say that like you think it won’t happen … “

Editor Bill Stevenson wrote: “Yes, I wrote that and still believe it will be invented long after you have retired. *smile*”
