Take A Golf Lesson Now?

| October 21, 2009 9:00 PM

Three and a half weeks ago, I was jet skiing on the lake as the thermometer hovered near 90.  Last weekend the overnight low hit 17 degrees.  Talk about a rude awakening, but the good news is that now, 60 degrees doesn't seem so bad!

This time of year most think about putting the clubs away for the season, but actually there is plenty of good golf to be played before winter arrives, and you'll likely fit in 6-8 more rounds, if not more.  Local courses are in great condition, the crowds thin out, and the rough is a little less punishing.  Not only is the golfing prime right now; its also a good time for golf lessons.  I know it sounds crazy, but let me explain.

Fall's cooler temperatures cause the ball to fly shorter distances. The cool weather and the extra layer of clothing (you are no longer comfortable in shorts and a polo shirt) lead to your muscles being just a trifle less responsive, and the swing becomes "tighter"—you are losing clubhead speed and distance.  These factors create a prime situation for a golfer to "lose the swing", creating bad habits that will carry over into next season.  Any improvement you've made this year can be headed straight for the septic tank.
Instead of allowing that to happen, you can make this time productive by working with an instructor to solidify your swing.  By practicing and playing using good fundamentals in the cooler conditions, you will embed the good habits you want, and prepare yourself to play much better golf next spring.  With the tournament season behind us, without the pressure to get a low score, you can focus on your mechanics more readily as you play.  As an added benefit, should you head south for a winter break, you'll play a lot better when you get there.
So, yes, I encourage you to consider lessons to reduce the probabilities of falling back into bad habits, and to continue making gains you've worked for all season.  And by all means, don't put those golf clubs away for at least another month!
