Students jog, bike for money

MOSES LAKE — Knolls Vista Elementary School students ran and biked laps to raise money for a more enriching school experience.

Susan Blackman, Parent Teacher Association (PTA) president, helped organize the sixth annual jog/bike-a-thon. 

Last year approximately $3,000 was raised through the event.

Students collected pledges from the community before the event. About 500 students and parents participated, Blackman said. 

“The kids had a great time and everything flowed well,” she said. “This was the first year we decided to add the bike portion after a suggestion from Michael Riggs, principal.  We were hesitant at first, but it went very well.”

Riggs acknowledged thanks to esteemed alumnus of Knolls Vista and local radio personality, Dale Roth, for donating his time to DJ at the event. 

Blackman said the money funds special guests and school activities such as the Reptile Man, Movie Night, Dr. Seuss Night and a large event such as the Spring Carnival. 

“We are actually saving some of the money earned to go toward a reader board for the school,” Blackman noted.

“I did the bike part and it was fun, but my legs are sore,” said fourth-grader Noah Plummer. “My favorite part was going up the hill and then around the curves.” 

Another student enjoyed the social aspect.

 “I liked it because there were a lot of people,” said third-grader Madison Blackman. “I did the bike portion and jogged, too.”

Riggs said he was pleased with the event.

 “We celebrate the participation of the children and the health benefits of exercise,” Riggs said. “Also gained, is the important additional benefit of building a sense of community with, school, staff, and parents.”
