THANKS

| October 1, 2009 9:00 PM

Thank you very much for the opportunity to have newspapers in our classroom on a regular basis.  We feel fortunate to have such a great resource for learning.

I have found many ways in which to use the newspaper in our classroom. Currently, we are learning about locating information in reading. The kids each have a newspaper to use and they are to find certain things (title, picture with a caption, author of an article, index, etc.), cut them out, and glue them on a diagram in the correct box on a piece of paper labeled with what it is they cut out. This is an important reading skill to learn and this hands-on experience is the best way for them to learn!

Throughout the school year, I plan to use the paper for social studies and math. Learning to read a newspaper for current events is an important skill in social studies. The students will choose an article to read, or read an assigned article and write about what happened in the article. In math, we will be working with ads found in the paper to practice adding and subtracting money.

We have found many ways to start using the paper right away, and each day, I think of more ways this resource is going to help us learn!  Thank you again for this opportunity.
