Moses Lake swimmers compete at state meet

FEDERAL WAY — Moses Lake High School’s Courtney Schwiesow recorded the Chiefs’ best showing at the Class 4A Swim & Dive State Meet at the Federal Way Aquatic Center, finishing 12th in the 100-yard breaststroke finals.

The sophomore, eliminated in the “B” finals, recorded a time of 1:08.40.

Schwiesow also finished 19th in the 200-yard individual medley as she was eliminated during the preliminary rounds.

Sophomore Sammy Hendrickson registered a 20th place score of 190.00 in the women’s 1-meter diving competition and freshman Amber Garrett ended up 22nd in the 200-yard freestyle with a 2:08.23.

With the season wrapped up, Moses Lake will now try to build off of the three girls’ performances to increase the program’s visibility and build its potential as a consistent state threat.

“Every one of them had individual best performances at the preliminaries on Friday,” Moses Lake Coach Tony St. Onge said. “They all dropped times from districts and so when you go over there and have lifetime best performances that’s all you can ask for.”

 St. Onge said he hopes to build a team capable of competing with Seattle schools.

“We’re trying to help kids from the Moses Lake area to build a program and those three kids are young and are building blocks for that to spearhead that movement.”
