Warden school levy passes

WARDEN — A capital levy, aimed at expanding and renovating parts of Warden schools’ buildings, passed during the general election.

About 58 percent of voters approved the levy.

Projects include renovations of the gym, locker rooms, kitchen and cafeteria area.

“We are going to start the process of submitting a request for state matching funds,” said superintendent Sandra Sheldon. “We will notify the state around the first of the new year.”

Warden school board members approved the decision to levy annual excess property taxes to pay the cost of the projects in August.

“We are looking to renovate the high school gymnasium and locker rooms and bring them up to health and safety levels compliant with (Americans with Disabilities Act) standards,” Sheldon said.

Construction includes new equipment, added space and upgraded electrical and mechanical systems.

“We are looking to renovate by using the same footprint of what we have already in place,” Sheldon said.

The total cost for each project is not yet known. More information is coming as the projects move forward, said Sheldon.

“The soonest bid for the project is July, when matching funds from the state are released,” Sheldon said.

Board members are meeting tomorrow and next week to finalize details and discuss designs for each project. They hope to hire an architect and construction management firm around January or February.

Sheldon expects to arrive at a cost estimate next week, she said.

“We are thrilled this passed and want to thank the community for supporting us,” Sheldon said.
