Fall Golf and Winter Reads
Owen McClain, Teaching Professional
As fall progresses, golfer's playgrounds are emptying out. Wherever I play, I'm finding wide open spaces, the best turfgrass and playing conditions of the year, and some fantastic values in fall rates. For example, my better half and I played at Colockum Ridge last Wednesday afternoon and had the place to ourselves; dense, healthy turf with good greens; and a fall rate of $10. Oh, and by hole 4 the sweater was no longer necessary.
Another benefit of fall golf is the sales which are ongoing in the pro shops. Markdowns are abundant, as it's "out with the old to make room for the new" season.
While the weather and conditions are still excellent for play, winter, nonetheless, is approaching. During the off-season, a little reading about the game is usually in order, and some of the best golf literature is simply not available at your local bookstore. Your reading selections for golf are not best served there anyway—most of what is on the shelves is pretty weak (golfers will buy just about anything). So, whether for yourself or as a gift for another, here is my list of suggestions:
"Munie—The Jitterbug Collection", by Bobby Steiner
"A Golfer's Life", by Arnold Palmer
"Bobby Jones on Golf", by Robert Tyre Jones, Jr.
"The Education of a Golfer", by Sam Snead
"Sam", by Al Barkow
"The Life of Tom Morris", by W.W. Tullock
"My Partner, Ben Hogan", by Jimmy Demaret
"In His Grip", by Jim Sheard and Wally Armstrong (inpirational/devotional)
