Chiefs hold off Wildcats to get sixth

Moses Lake 9, East Wenatchee 7; Selah 1, Ephrata 0; Quincy 3, Ellensburg 0; Connell 5, Royal 2; Quincy 2, Othello 1

EAST WENATCHEE, Wash. — The Moses Lake Chiefs boys soccer team climbed into the Columbia Basin Big Nine’s No. 6 district seed Saturday with a 1-0 victory over Eastmont.

The Chiefs took a 1-0 lead 17 minutes into the contest when Devin Petersen scored a goal after receiving a pass from Omar Ramirez.

Moses Lake senior goalie Mitch Harder made five saves in the victory on his way to recording the shutout. Moses Lake improved to 9-7 overall with the victory over Eastmont and the Chiefs will travel to No. 5 Davis Saturday in a loser-out district contest.

Boys Soccer

Selah 1, Ephrata 0

EPHRATA — The Ephrata Tigers and the Selah Vikings played through a scoreless first half before Selah capitalized on a goal in the 43rd minute to earn the 1-0 victory.

Ephrata senior goalie and captain Jordan Hurst made seven saves for the Tigers Saturday, but Selah’s Anthony Hemphill managed to sneak the ball into the Ephrata net to lift the Vikings into third place in the Central Washington Athletic Conference’s North Division.

Quincy 3, Ellensburg 0

ELLENSBURG, Wash. —  The Quincy Jackrabbits continued their late surge through the Central Washington Athletic Conference (CWAC) soccer standings with a 3-0 victory over the Ellensburg Bulldogs.

The Jackrabbits, who knocked off previously unbeaten Othello Thursday night, cruised past Ellensburg with three first-half goals.

Raul Serrano opened the scoring for the Jacks just five minutes into the contest when he took a pass from Efrian Alverado and found the back of the net. Juan Romero gave Quincy a 2-0 lead in the 17th minute when he found the back of the Ellensburg net. Alverado capped the scoring three minutes before halftime to give the Jacks a 3-0 lead.

Quincy goalie Cody Beaumont made kept the Bulldogs off of the scoreboard, recording 10 saves. The 3-0 win was Beaumont’s  seventh shutout of the season.

Connell 5, Royal 2

ROYAL CITY — The Royal Knights boys soccer team got a pair of goals from sophomore Shaq Ledezma, but the Connell Eagles wrapped up the South Central Athletic Conference East title Saturday with a 5-2 win over the Knights.

Connell took their first lead of the afternoon when Eduardo Arzate scored 4:43 into the contest.

The Knights tied the game two minutes into the second half when Ledezma scored the first of his two goals. Luis Esquivel assisted on both of Ledezma’s scores.

The Eagles scored two minutes after Ledezma’s goal tied the contest and added another goal two minutes after that to take a commanding 3-1 lead.

Ledezma helped the Knights pull within 3-2 in the 48th minute, but the Knights would not score again and Connell earned the 5-2 victory.

Thursday

Quincy 2, Othello 1

QUINCY — The Quincy Jackrabbits ruined Othello’s perfect Central Washington Athletic Conference (CWAC) soccer season Thursday night with a 2-1 shootout victory over the Huskies.

CWAC leading scorer B.G. Guzman scored in the fourth minute to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead, but Quincy’s Manuel Hernandez scored on a penalty kick in the 37th minute to tie the game for the Jackrabbits.

Both sides played through a scoreless second half and two overtimes to force a shootout. Quincy won 4-3 in the shootout to hand Othello to their first conference loss of the season.

Boys Tennis

Quincy 3, Ephrata 2

QUINCY — The Quincy boys tennis team capitalized on strong performances from the second and third doubles teams to fend off Central Washington Athletic Conference rival Ephrata 3-2 Thursday.

Fabian Galeara and Garrett Van Dyke knocked off Chris Ortega and Christian Nuckolls in the second doubles and Adam Wilson and Trevor Marcusen cruised in the third doubles to help the Jackrabbits to victory.

Quincy No. 2 singles Jonathan Velasquez held on for a pair of 6-4 wins to knock off Ephrata’s Connor Sears to clinch the match.

Ephrata No. 1 singles Blake Van Dyke and the Tigers’ No. 1 doubles team of Chris Norris and Thomas Pheasant each won matches for the Tigers.

Girls Tennis

Ephrata 3, Quincy 2

QUINCY — Ephrata took advantage of strong performances from singles players Chloe Schmidt and Mia Flint to knock of the Quincy girls tennis team 3-2 Thursday.

Schmidt and Flint each won three-set battles to give the Tigers a singles sweep.

Quincy took the first doubles match when Bonnie Knodell and Colleen Knodell swept Sara Ratigan and Anna Martell 6-0, 6-1.

Becca Boen and Tiffany Yeates gave Quincy their second win of the match, but Giang Bui and Delci Kooistra won the third doubles match to give Ephrata the victory.
