Man arrested for killing cattle

MOSES LAKE — Samuel S. Hagy, 55, Moses Lake, was arrested at his home after allegedly shooting two heifers in his yard on Road K Northeast near Moses Lake Wednesday.

Hagy was booked into Grant County Jail for two counts of malicious mischief in the first degree, malicious mischief in the third degree and unlawful discharge of a firearm, according to a Grant County Sheriff’s Office incident report.

When a deputy arrived at the scene, he reportedly saw two dead heifers in Hagy’s yard. The heifers were one and two years old. About 10 more live cattle were also in the yard.

Hagy was accused of tampering with a fence, which led to the cattle escaping into his yard, according to the document. A deputy reported the fence was padlocked and it did not appear the cattle could have opened it themselves. The gate appeared to be pried open on Hagy’s side. The hot wire fencing was also cut with a tool.

There was allegedly a dispute about the property line between the two neighbors, the sheriff’s office reported.

Law enforcement located a witness, who reported seeing Hagy shoot one of the heifers.

Law enforcement plans to review a video possibly featuring information connected to the incident.

Prior to the deputy arriving at the scene, there was an emergency call from a person reporting they saw Hagy allegedly shoot at the cattle and another call from Hagy reporting he shot the cattle because they were attacking his dog in his yard, according to the report.
