Huskies beat Jacks
OTHELLO —The Othello boys soccer team survived a physical Central Washington Athletic Conference (CWAC) match at home with defending league champion Quincy Saturday to remain atop the conference standings.
The Huskies battled the Jackrabbits throughout Saturday’s conference match to hold on to the 3-2 victory, knocking off formerly unbeaten Quincy. The Huskies improved to 3-0 in CWAC play with the victory.
Othello jumped on the scoreboard first, taking a 1-0 lead late in the first half when B.G. Guzman fielded a pass from Estie Miron and the Huskies took a one-goal advantage into the half.
After playing tight for the majority of the first half, Quincy and Othello continued to battle until Estie Miron found Jorge Campos for a 2-0 Othello lead.
Othello head coach Bernie Garza said Saturday’s CWAC contest was both physical and important.
“Saturday’s game had league (championship) implications,” Garza said. “We were both undefeated and the game was highly physical.”
Garza was right.
Quincy and Othello played through a total of 10 yellow cards and three additional red cards.
“It was a tough, physical match. Every ball was contested,” he said. “The ref was quick to pull out the cards.”
The Jackrabbits tried to narrow the gap in the 71st minute when Ronald Sorto cut Othello’s lead in half at 2-1.
With momentum beginning to swing in Quincy’s favor, the Huskies did their best to stop the Jackrabbits. Just two minutes after Quincy pulled within a goal of Othello, Eddie Morales helped Othello take a 3-1 lead after he scored on a pass from Oscar Pena.
Quincy capped the scoring with their second goal of the afternoon in the 78th minute before falling on the road 3-2.
Saturday’s CWAC contest was physical and Garza said he was proud to see his team knock off the defending champions.
“We are still undefeated,” he said. “We hope to continue that.”
