MOSES LAKE — The Moses Lake Chiefs boys baseball team continued their perfect start to the season Saturday with a two-game sweep over the visiting Graham-Kapowsin Eagles at Larson Playfield.

The Chiefs battled to improve to 3-0 overall Saturday with a 2-1 victory over the Eagles in game one.

Moses Lake and Graham-Kapowsin played through a pair of scoreless innings to start the game before the Chiefs climbed their way onto the scoreboard in the bottom of the third inning.

With the scored tied, Moses Lake senior Zach Martinez homered in the home-half of the inning to give the Chiefs a 1-0 lead.

After Moses Lake starting pitcher Brock Lybbert managed to keep the Eagles off of the scoreboard in the top of the fourth  inning, the Chiefs took a 2-0 lead following an RBI from senior catcher Matt Harris. Lybbert kept the Eagles off balance for four innings Saturday, allowing just three hits while striking out five Graham-Kapowsin batters.

The Chiefs would take their 2-0 advantage into the top of the sixth inning before the Eagles managed to score a run to pull within 2-1.

Graham-Kapowsin kept the Chiefs off of the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth before Moses Lake’s Dylan Signorelli stepped on the mound in the top of the seventh to close out the game for the Chiefs.

Moses Lake head coach Ed McNamara said his team played well in the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader.

“(We had) a great first game,” he said. “We had good pitching and good defense (and) neither team committed any errors.”

After holding on to a 2-1 victory in the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader with visiting Graham-Kapowsin, the Moses Lake Chiefs took to the Larson Playfield looking for their fourth straight win to start the season.

Moses Lake (4-0, 0-0) jumped on Graham-Kapowsin early with a pair of runs in the first inning as the Chiefs took an early 2-0 lead.

Following a scoreless second inning, the Eagles managed to cut the Moses Lake advantage in half with a run in the top of the third inning to pull within 2-1.

Although the Eagles managed to pull within a run of the Chiefs in the top of the inning, Moses Lake found some breathing room in the bottom of the inning.

Moses Lake exploded onto the scoreboard with eight runs on six hits to push the Chiefs to a commanding 10-1 lead over the Eagles.

Moses Lake starting pitcher Blaine Myers kept Graham-Kapowsin off of the scoreboard in the top of the fourth before the potent Moses Lake offense added to their lead in the bottom of the fourth with a pair of runs scored on passed balls, McNamara said.

“Blaine Myers had (pitched) really well and we took a 12-1 lead into the top of the fifth,” he said. “We had a bit of a hiccup in the (top of) the fifth.”

With Moses Lake holding a 12-1 lead and only three outs away from a mercy-rule victory, the Graham-Kapowsin offense came alive for nine fifth-inning runs and the Eagles turned a certain defeat into a 12-10 game.

Although the Chiefs surrendered nine runs in the fifth inning, Moses Lake got one of them back in the bottom of the fifth to take a 13-10 lead.

However, the Eagles pulled within 13-11 in the top of the sixth inning.

With the Chiefs clinging to a 13-11 lead late, Signorelli came on to close out the second Moses Lake victory of the day.
