Jacks stumble in state tournament opener

YAKIMA, Wash. — After rolling to a Central Washington Athletic Conference district boys basketball tournament championship last week, the Quincy Jacks couldn’t maintain their momentum Wednesday at the state tournament.

Quincy battled with a stingy Anacortes team Wednesday morning before the Seahawks were able to knock off the Jacks 48-41 in the first round of the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association 2A boys basketball state tournament.

Anacortes built a 14-9 first quarter lead and eventually pushed it to a 23-16 advantage thanks to Jackson Kirkpatrick and Mackenzie Larkin. Larkin and Kirkpatrick combined for 31 points for the Seahawks.

With the Seahawks holding the lead following the half, the Jacks managed to make just 31 percent of their shots in the second half, going 10-for-32 from the floor.

Quincy senior Eric Martin helped the Jacks stay in the game with 24 points. Although Martin led the Jacks in scoring, no other Quincy player scored more than six points in the loss.

Despite Martin’s game-high scoring performance, the Jacks couldn’t get closer than four points in the second half.

Anacortes managed to push the advantage to 34-26 in the third quarter before Quincy managed to trim the advantage to seven points in the fourth quarter before falling 48-41.

Quincy returned to the court this morning at 9 a.m. to take on the Hockinson Hawks in a loser-out consolation contest.

Quicy head coach Wade Petersen was unavailable for comment.
