MLCA seniors named to 1B All-State team
MOSES LAKE — After leading their Moses Lake Christian Academy boys basketball team to the 1B state title game, seniors Adrian Moffet and Riggs Yarbro were named to the Washington State Coaches Association (WSCA) 1B All-State team last week.
Moffet and Yarbro are two of 10 seniors selected by the WSCA, said WSCA All-State game coordinator Gary Wusterbarth.
“The 1B coaches got together and nominated seniors to play in the game,” he said. “Riggs and Adrian are both confirmed.”
Moses Lake Christian is coming off of the best basketball season in school history when Moffet and Yarbro helped the Lions to an undefeated league championship, a district tournament championship and to a second-place finish at the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association 1B boys state championship at the Yakima SunDome. Moffet and Yarbro were both selected to the All-tournament first team for their performances last month.
Yarbro, who will be awarded the WSCA 1B Player of the Year award during the All-State game, said the recognition is rewarding.
“It’s been great,” he said. “Especially since I sat out last year with a (knee) injury.”
Although Yarbro is proud of the individual recognition, he cherishes the opportunity to play in the state title game.
“It was a great run (through the tournament),” he said. “It was the highest (the school) has ever placed. All of the recognition to me means nothing. The (whole team) experience was great.”
Moffet and Yarbro share the same sentiments regarding their team’s season.
“I couldn’t ask for anything more from my teammates,” Moffet said of the Lions’ season. “It goes to show we had a pretty good team this year.”
While Moffet said he appreciates the opportunity to play for the state championship, he says the All-State selection is impressive.
“It is kind of cool to know you are being recognized as one of the top 10 seniors,” he said. “It is really cool.”
Moffet and Yarbro will represent the Moses Lake Christian Lions March 21 at the 1B-2B All-State basketball game at Franklin High School in Seattle.
Wusterbarth said the All-State game is an opportunity for classification rivals to unite.
“This is a good opportunity to get players together and team up after they had been competitive with each other all year,” he said. “It’s really fun for everyone involved.”
The opening tip is scheduled for 2 p.m.
