James Russell Mitchell

James Russell Mitchell, 90, of Issaquah (formerly of Moses Lake), passed away on Feb. 28, 2009, in Seattle.

Jim was born on Oct. 2, 1918, in Wiggins, Colo. He was raised and graduated from high school in Fort Morgan. On Jan. 14, 1940, he married Virginia Stiverson in Fort Morgan. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He later worked on the construction of the Alcan Highway in Alaska.

They lived in Parker Heights, Wash., from 1946 to 1954, where he worked for U & I Sugar Company in Toppenish, Wash.

In 1954, they moved to Moses Lake with U & I Sugar where he served as comptroller until the plant was closed in 1980.

They retired to Westport, Wash., in 1980, where he was a commercial fisherman and enjoyed the ocean and the area. They were members of the South Beach Presbyterian Church. In his leisure time he enjoyed woodworking, gardening and reading. Jim spent 20 years on the Westport Civil Service Commission. In 2007, he moved with his wife to Issaquah, Wash. Jim was a lifetime member of the Masonic Lodge in Toppenish, Wash., and a lifelong member of The Lions Club in Moses Lake.

Survivors include two sons Richard J. Mitchell, of Issaquah, Wash., Kirk T. Mitchell, of Puyallup, Wash.; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Virginia on Jan. 19, 2009.
