Wildland fire erupts near Ephrata

| June 30, 2009 9:00 PM

EPHRATA — A wildland fire erupted near Ephrata Tuesday afternoon.

More than 100 acres were reported to be burning at 4:45 p.m., according to Kyle Foreman, Grant County Emergency Management public information officer.

The fire was burning shrub steppe, making it tough terrain for firefighters to move through on foot and by ground vehicles.

A helicopter was being used to drop water, after support was requested from the state Department of Natural Resources.

Two homes and agricultural crops were threatened, but firefighters were posted to protect the properties, Foreman stated.

No injuries were reported.

The Columbia Basin Herald has reporters working near the fire to provide news coverage.
