Trapped man rescued from concrete wall

QUINCY — Grant County Fire District 3 rescued a man trapped in a crane beneath a concrete wall section at a construction site Tuesday afternoon.

Crews were building an expansion at an apple storage facility near Industrial Parkway.

The man was operating a crane when a concrete wall panel fell on top of the crane, said Fire Chief Don Fortier.

The wall became dislodged from a support beam, the Quincy Police Department reported.

The man was trapped inside the crane by the equipment itself and partially by the concrete.

Firefighters used jackhammers to chip away the concrete. Extraction equipment was used to dismantle a portion of the cab to remove the man, Fortier said.

The man’s leg was pinned in the cab where a section of the wall fell, police reported.

He was conscious and alert but was transported to Quincy Valley Medical Center for treatment, Fortier said. The extent of his injuries were not known, he added.

The fire district remained at the scene for about one and a half hours.

The Grant County Fire District 5 heavy rescue team and the Grant County Public Utility District technical rescue team were called for assistance but firefighters were able to remove the man before their arrival.

The construction site was located on Port of Quincy property on the northwest side of the city.
