MOSES LAKE — More than 275 participants battled unpredictable weather conditions Saturday to compete in the Family Triathlon race at Blue Heron Park in Moses Lake.

Family Triathlon and U.S.A. Triathlon Certified Race Director Deanna Mullen said Saturday’s weather was strange.

“It was an odd weather day,” she said. “One moment is was sunny and warm and then it was raining. Then it was sunny then it was raining and then it was raining.”

Roger Thompson won the Olympic-length event in 1:46:58.6, nearly eight minutes faster than second-place Rusty Pruden, Mullen said.

“(Thompson) was blistering fast,” she said. “He was dang fast. He was (more than) seven minutes ahead of his competitors.

Rom Roseberry (1:02:11.0) edged out Heiko Stopsack (1:03:05.0) to claim the Sprint-length victory and J. Gregory Kline won the Family-length race over Alex Graeber.

Saturday’s races were competitive and wouldn’t not have been possible without race volunteers, Mullen said.

“The volunteer groups were amazing,” she said. “The cheer squad and the key club from (Moses Lake High School) were there to help.”

Athletes of all abilities competed at the Family Triathlon races at Blue Heron Park and Mullen said the participants were inspirational.

“It (was) fun to see the people come out,” she said. “There is such a wide range of athletic ability and everybody is competing and having fun together. Watching people cross the line is so encouraging.”
