Candidates finish filing for election
COLUMBIA BASIN — Friday was the final day for people to file for an elected office in Grant and Adams counties.
A total, of 150 people filed for office in both counties with 20 contested races.
There are two contested races in Adams County for the Othello area.
Three current Othello city councilmembers filed for the mayor’s position by Friday afternoon. The candidates are Tim Wilson, Eleanor Brodahl and Ken Johnson. Current Mayor Shannon McKay did not file for re-election.
Five candidates have filed for state representative for the Ninth Legislative District, which includes Adams County. The five candidates are Pat Hailey, of Mesa, Darin Watkins, of Palouse, Susan Fagan, of Pullman, Art Swannack, of Lamont, and Glen R. Stockwell, of Ritzville.
Races with more than two candidates will be voted on during the primary election Aug. 18. The top two candidates receiving the most votes will face off in the Nov. 3 general election.
A total, of 22 people registered in Adams County for races affecting Othello.
In Grant County, 128 people filed for offices.
There were 18 contested races in Grant County. They are for Grant County Prosecutor, Grant County Fire District 3, Coulee City Council, Ephrata City Council, George City Council, Hartline City Council, Hospital District 2, Moses Lake City Council, Port, of Moses Lake, Quincy City Council, Moses Lake School District and Soap Lake School District.
Three people have filed to run for prosecutor, according to the Grant County Auditor’s Office. Prosecutor Angus Lee was the last to file, after private attorney Robert Schiffner and Grant County Deputy Prosecutor Albert Lin.
