Quincy agrees to reconnect sewer line

QUINCY — The Quincy City Council approved an emergency Tuesday to reconnect a sewer line, which was accidentally sealed off.

The 8-inch sewer pipe was disconnected at the intersection of state Route 281 and Road 9 during the West Canal crossing project, Maintenance Supervisor Dave Reynolds said. When the city was doing the project, there were two sets of drawings. One showed the pipe was connected and the other showed the pipe was abandoned.

“Inadvertently a sewer line we believed to be abandoned turned out to be not abandoned. This is a project that needs to be completed immediately,” he said. “It needs to be reconnected, possibly in a different configuration, but something has to be done.”

So far the sewage affected one home, backing up into the basement, but there are several homes in a nearby trailer park, Reynolds said. MRM Construction, who is working on the reclaimed wastewater project for the city, will provide the city with a price.

“Because the sewage is backing up into people’s homes, we feel it’s important enough to request the council declare an emergency, so we can contract directly with MRM,” said Larry Julius, a principal with the Gray and Osborne engineering firm. “(The company) can jump on it starting tomorrow morning.”

Reynolds said the work should be done before the weekend.
