Othello boys earn Sportsmanship award

OTHELLO — The Othello boys and girls No. 1 doubles teams wrapped up their impressive seasons over the weekend with trips to the 2A state tournament and a pair of first team All-Central Washington Athletic Conference (CWAC) tennis selections.

The Othello boys doubles team of Sam Harris and Taylor Petersen, and the Othello girls team of Jadee Roylance and Jessy Schmidt each were named first-team selections by the conference’s coaches.

Harris and Peterson, and Roylance and Schmidt each made runs through the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association 2A state tennis tournaments but neither team could bring home state trophies.

The Othello boys tennis also earned a second-team doubles selection with seniors Ryley Petersen and Judah Gowan.

The Ephrata Tigers girls tennis team earned a second-team singles selection in junior Chloe Schmidt.

Schmidt finished third at the CWAC North sub-district tennis tournament before falling to Cintia Gil of Toppenish in the consolation bracket of the district tournament. Othello junior Ashleigh Snyder joined Schmidt on the CWAC’s singles second team.

Ephrata earned another all-conference selection when junior Tyler Van Heusden was an honorable-mention pick for the Tigers boys tennis team. Van Heusden qualified for the 2A boys singles tournament before dropping his first two matches.

Quincy’s lone all-conference selection came on the boys side when senior Blake Van Dyke was named honorable mention.

Boys Singles

First Team: Aaron Porter, junior, Ellensburg; Josiah Jackson, junior, Ellensburg.

Second Team: Ammon Stancliffe, senior, Toppenish; Rogi Fajardo, senior, Grandview.

Honorable Mention: Tyler Van Heusden, junior, Ephrata; Blake Van Dyke, senior, Quincy.

Boys Doubles

First Team: Sam Harris (senior) and TD Peterson (junior), Othello; Kevin Bertelsen (junior) and Devin Teske (junior), Selah. Kevin Bertelsen (junior) and Devin Teske (junior), Selah.

Second Team: Ryley Peterson (senior) and Judah Gowan (senior), Othello; Lucas Reynolds (junior) and Noah French (junior), Toppenish; Michael Komorowski (sophomore)  and Bryan Elliot (junior), Ellensburg.

Honorable Mention: Rogelio Ruiz (senior) and Greg Strom (junior), Wapato.

Boys Coach of Year: Mark Morrill, Ellensburg.

Boys Team Sportsmanship Award: Othello

Girls Singles

First Team: Abigail Pellett, sophomore, Ellensburg; Cintia Gil, senior, Toppenish.

Second Team: Emily Carbaugh, junior, Ellensburg; Chloe Schmidt, junior, Ephrata. Ashleigh Snyder, junior, Othello.

Honorable Mention: Lizette Melendez, sophomore, Wapato.

Girls Doubles

First Team: Lauren Carey (senior) and Shelby Welch (senior), Selah; Jaime Miller (junior) and Kayla Davis (junior), East Valley; Jessy Schmidt (senior) and Jadee Roylance (senior), Othello.

Second Team: Karmina Markus (junior) and Haily Larson (sophomore), Prosser.

Honorable Mention: Joelle Smart (junior) and Mizan Brown (sophomore), Ellensburg; Daphne Hall (junior) and Ali Gray (sophomore), Ellensburg.

Girls Coach of Year: Cory Bemis, East Valley.
