Man wounded in drive-by shooting

| June 2, 2009 9:00 PM

SCHWANA — Roughly nine bullets struck a mobile home in Schwana, wounding a 21-year-old man and narrowly missing an infant Sunday.

A car drove by the home at approximately 3 a.m. and a suspect in the car fired a gun at the home, in what Grant County Sheriff’s Office investigators believe is a gang related drive-by shooting.

The man was sleeping in his bed and suffered gunshot wounds to both of his legs, Undersheriff John Turley stated Monday. The victim was transported by Grant County Fire District 8 EMTs to Samaritan Healthcare for treatment. He was later transported to Spokane.

One bullet came within 12 inches of a 6-month-old boy sleeping on a couch in the living room, Turley added.

“Considering that nine people occupied the residence, the family narrowly escaped having more than one victim” he stated.

The victim is reported to be stable and “is uncooperative in the investigation,” Turley noted.

Scwana is between Vantage and Mattawa along state Route 243.
