TACOMA, Wash. — Othello junior Christine Kirkwood captured the first javelin state championship of her career over the weekend with a throw of 151 feet, 10 inches at the 2A state track meet at Mount Tahoma High School in Tacoma, Wash.

Kirkwood’s championship in the javelin, along with junior Tiffany Martinez’s third-place finish in the discus, helped propel the Huskies into a tie with Riverside for 16th place at the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association 2A state track meet.

Although Kirkwood returned home to Othello with her first state championship, it wasn’t the first for the Kirkwood family. Kirkwood’s older sister, Courtney, won three straight titles in the javelin for the Huskies in 2006, 2007, and 2008.

While the Huskies managed to claw their way to 16th place, the Ephrata Tigers girls capitalized on a third-place finish from Jordyn Murray in the shot put event to finish tied with Kingston High School for 21st place.

Ephrata head coach Dan Martin said his team performed well during the season.

“The competition was really stiff,” he said. “When you get to state, you have to have your A-game on mentally. (We) competed well, we just didn’t get it done. Overall, it was a really great season.”

Ephrata added an academic state championship to their trophy case over the weekend. The Tigers earned the academic honor with a 3.754 team grade point average.
