TACOMA, Wash. —— Ephrata senior Wes Chamberlain wrapped up his high school career at the 2A state track meet in Tacoma, Wash., over the weekend by capturing his third state championship in the pole vault — breaking his own state record in the process.

Chamberlain vaulted a state record 15 feet, 8 inches at the state meet, helping the Ephrata Tigers boys track team to a third-place finish at the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association 2A state track meet at Mount Tahoma High School in Tacoma, Wash.

Ephrata head track coach Dan Martin said Chamberlain was impressive at the state track meet.

“He broke his own meet record, again,” he said. “He is a three-time defending champion in the pole vault.”

Chamberlain’s record-breaking vault came after he cleared 15 feet to secure his third consecutive title in the pole vault. R.A. Long junior Kody Cassidy finished second in the event with a vault of 14 feet, 6 inches.

Chamberlain easily cleared 15 feet before attempting to break his meet record of 15 feet, 5 inches, Martin said.

“(Cassidy vaulted) 14 feet, 6 inches and Wes never vaults below 15 feet,” Martin said. “He clinched it with a vault at 15 feet and then cleared (15 feet, 6 inches, so we moved it up to 15 feet, 8 inches.”

Chamberlain broke his state record and attempted to become just the 20th vaulters in  Washington state history to vault 16 feet, Martin said.

“(He) moved it to 16 feet and had two awesome tries at it,” he said. Chamberlain did not clear 16 feet.

Ephrata junior Jerome Prescod had strong performances for the Tigers at the state meet. Prescod finished second in the triple jump and third in the high jump to help boost the Tigers into the top-3.

Martin said his team performed well over the weekend.

“Going into the final race, we were in first place,” he said. “The kids competed great.”

Washington Interscholastic Activities Association 1A State Track Meet

CHENEY, Wash. — Although Royal senior Blair Collins set a personal record in the long jump with a leap of 22 feet, 4 inches at the 1A state track meet at Eastern Washington University, it wasn’t enough to give Collins his second state title in the event.

Seattle Christian’s Al Lang was able to defeat Collins by one-quarter inch (22 feet, 4.25 inches) to claim the title.

Collins, who competed in three individual events for the Knights,  finished second in the 100 meters for the second time. Collins finished fourth in the triple jump.
