ANACORTES, Wash. — The Moses Lake 13-year-old Babe Ruth All-Star team ended their season with a third-place finish at the Washington state 13-year-old Babe Ruth Championships in Anacortes, Wash., this past weekend.

The Moses Lake team lost 2-1 to Ellensburg, who went on to win the state championship.

Moses Lake only required five innings to dispose of Central Kitsap with Chase Tunstall pitching the five-inning shut out and was backed up offensively by Brett Moser’s 3-for-3 performance. Brad Fox and Colton Kelly also contributed to the win with two hits each.

Moses Lake squeezed out a 3-2 victory in game two against North Olympic. Jacob Price and Moser combined for a four-hitter.

With the game tied at 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth, Fox led off with a single and immediately stole second.

After a sacrifice from Tunstall, Kelly laid down a perfect squeeze bent to score Fox for the lead and Moser shut down North Olympic for the win.

With a semifinal game assured, the Moses Lake All-Star team used a pitcher-by-committee approach in a 9-6 loss to Sedro Woolley, Wash. Tanner Gonsalez led the way with three hits.

In the semifinal game against Ellensburg, Gonsalez doubled, followed by an RBI by Jacob Williams Moses Lake took the lead. Tunstall ran his scoreless innings pitched streak to 10, holding the opponents scoreless through five innings.

Ellensburg scored two runs in the sixth inning and Moses Lake was unable to respond in the seventh, ending the 2009 All-Star season.

It was a fundamentally well-played game by both teams. If the Moses Lake All-Star team got one more hit or made one more play, they would have played for the championship, said Moses Lake head coach Ron Moser.

“It’s tough to lose a game like that to end the season when we were playing so well,” he said. “The boys should be proud of themselves. Year after year this group of kids have proved to be one of the best teams in the state for their age. This group of kids will have more opportunities for success in the future.”
