Right to Life Walk attracts about 200 people
MOSES LAKE — More than 200 people braved the wind and below-freezing temperatures to protest the legalization of abortion.
The Knights of Columbus sponsored an annual Right to Life walk in Moses Lake on Sunday. The walk is meant to draw attention to the Jan. 22 anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court decision on the case of Roe versus Wade, said Mark Krcma, the Moses Lake Knights of Columbus’ pro-life chair.
“This isn’t a Catholic issue,” he told the crowd. “This isn’t a Lutheran issue. This is a human rights issue.”
Walkers traveled down Stratford Road from the former Liquidation World parking lot to Valley Road and returned to their cars. They started at 1 p.m.
While Krcma was concerned about the cold weather keeping people indoors, Tom Hickman one of the marchers, said more people attended the event than in his 15 years of participation. He appreciated the marchers’ determination.
“On a cold day like this, it takes a lot of resolve to come out and do this,” Hickman said.
Krcma, who’s been involved in the march for five years, said he became involved with the movement because of his conscience. His parents are involved with the movement and they got him involved as well.
While he stopped being involved because of other obligations, he came back to the movement because he felt he needed to do something about abortion.
“Nothing is more important than this,” he said. “What if our parents made the choice? It’s as simple as that.”
This was Ethan Crowell’s second year coming to this march. He decided to come when he heard about the walk.
“Abortion is murder,” he said. “This is all I can do against it, so I’m doing it.”
During the march, a car honked and a driver waved in support of the marchers, Hickman said it was far different then when he first participated.
“We used to have people giving us the middle finger,” he said. “We only had about 10 to 12 people (when the walk started.) When I pulled into the parking lot and saw it was filled with cars, I couldn’t believe my eyes.”
