MOSES LAKE — The Billygoats of Pateros made the trip to the Columbia Basin Secondary School Tuesday night to take on the Phoenix. The trip was worth the effort for the Billygoats as they held off the Phoenix for a 50-44 North Central Washington 1B victory.

Pateros capitalized on an effective running-style offense to defeat the Columbia Basin Secondary School at him.

The Billygoats jumped out to an early lead and never trailed the remainder of the game.

At the end of the first quarter the Billygoats built up an 18-10 lead of the Phoenix. Pateros continued their basketball dominance in the second quarter and the Billygoats took a 32-24 advantage heading into the half.

The Columbia Basin Secondary School came out in the second half and exchanged baskets with Pateros through the beginning of the third quarter. However, as the third period progressed the Phoenix couldn’t hold on as the Billygoats kept their running-style offense in gear and ended the third quarter with a 41-33 advantage.

The Columbia Basin Secondary School picked up their game in the third quarter and worked to close the gap. The Phoenix managed to rise in the fourth quarter and pulled within six points down the stretch. However, despite freshman Kayleb Jensen’s 12 points, the Columbia Basin Secondary School couldn’t knock off Pateros at home.

The Columbia Basin Secondary School head coach James Shank said Pateros is a tough opponent.

“They were a good test for us tonight,” he said. “Pateros is undefeated in the league.”

Although the Columbia Basin Secondary School fell in defeat, Shank said he was proud of the way his team played Tuesday night.

“They never gave up,” Shank said. “I could not be more proud of a bunch of men as I am tonight.”
