Bulldogs nip Chiefs for district title

PASCO, Wash. — The Moses Lake Chiefs girls basketball team pushed their Columbia Basin Big Nine district championship game with Pasco to overtime Friday night, but the Bulldogs rallied to win the game 72-69.

The Chiefs controlled the game early in the contest by taking a 15-9 lead over the third-ranked and undefeated Pasco Bulldogs.

Pasco stormed back in the second quarter, but the Chiefs were able to take a 29-26 lead into the half.

With the Chiefs leading at the break, the Bulldogs came out in the second half and took a 45-44 lead heading into the final quarter.

Moses Lake worked their way back into the contest in the fourth quarter before Pasco junior Danielle Walter gave the Bulldogs a 61-58 lead with 28 seconds left.

The Chiefs moved the ball down the court and worked their offense before Moses Lake head coach Matt Strophy called a timeout.

After the Chiefs broke their huddle, Moses Lake got the ball to senior Chayla Hirz in the corner and she hit a game-tying 3-point shot with just 6 seconds left to send the game to overtime.

The Chiefs took a one-point lead at 69-68 with one minute remaining in the game before Walter put the Bulldogs on top for good, hitting four straight free throws with less than a minute remaining to give the Bulldogs the victory.

Moses Lake will host the Richland Bombers Tuesday night at 6 p.m. in the first round of the regional tournament.
