Chiefs get job done in big win at Davis
MOSES LAKE — They are not quite where they want to be but Moses Lake High School’s wrestling team still finds ways to win.
On Thursday night the Chiefs went bowling as they kept knocking out pin, after pin, after pin, in a 51-21 win.
Of their nine wins, eight were by pin including three within the first minute of action - Ricco Moreno (145-pounds) 1st-round at :17, Kabe Fluaitt (285-pounds) 1st-round at :30, and David Peralez (125-pounds) 1st-round pin at :47.
“We wore them down and in some of those matches we pinned them quickly,” Moses Lake coach Jamie Wise said. “Some cases they were some close matches until we pinned them after grinding them out. So we found ways to get pins in tougher spots too.”
Other wins for the Chiefs (3-0) came via Brian Chamberlain (215-pounds) 1st-round pin at 1:15, Logan Phelps (171-pounds) 2nd round pin at 2:27, Andrew Valdez (119-pounds) 3rd-round pin at 4:54, Jordan Bishop (140-pounds) 3rd-round pin at 4:58, and Beau Gleed (103-pounds) won who in an 8-7 decision.
Gleed, a freshman, came back from a 7- 3 deficit to record the rousing win,
“He had a great match to beat a kid that placed eighth at state last year,” Wise said. “He showed a lot of heart and a lot of guts. He did an awesome job.”
Next the Chiefs will travel to the Central Valley Tournament at Inland Empire, Calif.
Now Wise hopes his team’s issues with defensive wrestling continue to work themselves out.
“For some of our kids our defense did improve but we’re still working on it,” Wise said. “We have some more video now to go over with the guys and shore up a few things so we can score in different situations. It was a good learning experience and we’ll come out of it better.”
Othello 57, Wapato 16
WAPATO - Starting off with three loses on the night the Huskies may have been down on their luck but that was anything but the case.
The Othello wrestling team soon got its groove and moved on to a resounding 57-16 thumping of their hosts in Wapato.
“At first I was concered because we were missing some kids and we weren’t certified at the right weight classes,” Othello coach Rueben Martinez said. “We came out aggressive and that helped us a lot.”
Despite losing the early matches their effort shined through and led to some big wins by the Huskies, according to Martinez.
Othello wins were recorded by, Eduardo Montes (135-pounds) major decision victory of 15-4, Reuben Lopez (140-pounds) a techinical fall win, Matthew Melo (145-pounds) 1st-round pin at :25, Amando DeLeon (160-pounds) 2nd-round pin at 2:30, Daniel Walker (171-pounds) 2ndround pin at 2:33, Alberto Vargas (189-points) a 10-6 decision, Joey Gomez (285-pounds) 1st-round pin at :47, Anthony Barrera (103-pounds) a 3-1 decision, and Lucas Garza (112-pounds) a 3rd-round pin at 5:23.
The Huskies will now use the win to keep their momentum for The Othello Leonard Schutte Invitational on Saturday.
