Grant Fire District 5 responds to two fires
MOSES LAKE — Grant County Fire District 5 responded to two residential fires Sunday in the areas surrounding Moses Lake.
The first fire was reported at about 3 a.m.
“We had a fully engulfed residential structure just on the other side of Hiawatha Road on Road 5 Northeast,” said Battalion Chief Rick Wentworth.
The fire began on a porch when the wind apparently blew over a heat lamp used to keep a dog warm, he explained.
The occupants in the home awoke to the noise of exploding ammunition left on the porch, Wentworth said.
By the time the first fire truck arrived on scene, the home was engulfed with flames.
“It was completely destroyed,” he said.
The occupants are now staying with family members.
The second fire was reported on Lybbert Drive later in the afternoon.
A 12-foot by 60-foot mobile home caught fire, Wentworth said. No one was home. A passerby reported seeing the fire.
Extensive damage was reported, he explained. Firefighters managed to save the majority of the home’s contents.
The cause of the fire is being investigated by the Grant County Fire Marshal’s Office.
