SOAP LAKE β€” Maynard Hagen is running for Soap Lake School District director position two because he is interested in educating youth.

He stated his experience serving other groups will help him meet the demands of the position.

He served the Soap Lake City Council for nine years, worked with the volunteer ambulance for two years, served the fire department for 10 years and served on the advisory committee for the new school. He stated the experience taught him how to communicate with people in the community.

The challenges facing the position are accountability of the board, administration, staff and students, Hagen stated.

He explained people should vote for him because he has experience, time, desire and the ability to serve.

When asked about his views concerning funding facility improvements, he stated he was not yet familiar with the funding available and applicable rules.

Hagen stated communication is the key for success between school board members, school employees and the general public.

When it comes to the board managing the budget with the state funding cutbacks, he explained it’s important to first determine the extent of the cutbacks and work with what they have.

Hagen stated he is interested in adding more opportunities for vocational education in the school curriculum.

He explained his top priority for the position is to ensure all youth in the school district get a good education.
