MOSES LAKE — Although the Pirates won four of their first six games to start their nine-game road trip, Moses Lake stumbled over the weekend in Wenatchee, Wash., dropping three straight to the AppleSox.

Moses Lake took the opening series of the road trip 2-1 against the Spokane RiverHawks and the Pirates took the second series of the three-stop road trip 2-1 against the Kelowna Falcons before falling to 9-35 overall following a three-game sweep at the hands of the AppleSox.

The Pirates got off to a solid start before the road trip, taking the final game of their recent homestand on July 23 1-0 over Wenatchee.

Moses Lake starting pitcher Billy Armstrong threw 7 1/3 innings of shut-out baseball before Brett Swett and Kacy Gardiner came on in relief to close the game out for the Pirates.

Moses Lake maintained the momentum from their homestand finale to knock off the RiverHawks 3-1 for a two-game winning streak. The Pirates dropped the second game of the series 6-1 before recovering to take the finale 9-0.

Designated hitter Zane Bator and shortstop Chris Casazza hit back-to-back home runs in the sixth inning of the contest and Moses Lake took another series from the RiverHawks.

The Pirates recorded their second win streak of the road trip two nights later when they held on for a 5-4 victory.

The Moses Lake recorded the victory thanks in part to Casazza’s performance at the plate. Casazza broke the WCL record for home runs with his seventh of the season.

Moses Lake dropped the second game of the series 5-3 before taking the finale 8-3.

Jye Lanphere homered for the Pirates in the contest and Armstrong improved to 3-5 on the season with the victory.

Although the Pirates rolled into Wenatchee over the weekend having won four of six on the road and five of seven overall, Moses Lake couldn’t find an answer for the AppleSox.

Despite receiving a pair of home runs from Casazza in the series opener, the Pirates couldn’t get past the AppleSox who held on for a 4-3 victory.

Casazza added his WCL record with a solo shot in the third. He extended his season total to nine with a two-run shot in the seventh.

Moses Lake dropped the second game 6-5 before Wenatchee completed the sweep Sunday night with a 9-2 victory at home.

Although the Pirates won two series on the road, they couldn’t find an answer for Wenatchee and finished the road trip 4-5.

The Pirates will wrap up their season this weekend at Larson Playfield with a four-game homestand. Moses Lake will host the RiverHawks at 7:35 p.m. Thursday night before hosting the Kelowna Falcons over the weekend.
