Petersen dominates as Quincy rolls

TOPPENISH, Wash. — Quincy starting Pitcher Brett Petersen was stellar Tuesday afternoon, throwing five innings of perfect baseball in the Jackrabbits’ 10-0 win over Toppenish.

Petersen kept the Wildcats offense guessing all afternoon, recording nine of Toppenish’s 15 possible outs via strike out.

Quincy head coach Pat McGuire said Petersen pitched phenomenally Tuesday.

“He faced the minimum 15 batters and of those 15 batters he struck out nine,” he said. “What was impressive is that he only threw 50 pitches.”

Tuesday’s game with Toppenish lasted a little more than an hour and the Jacks got off to a fast start with six runs in the top of the first inning, McGuire said.

“We hit the ball well, they were all earned runs,” he said. The last time we played Toppenish we were aggressive but we didn’t have a game plan. This time we were agressive but patient.”

McGuire said his team has been impressive at the plate all season.

“We have done that all year,” McGuire said about having big innings. “This is one of the best offensive teams I have coached.”

The Jacks scored in each of the first four innings Tuesday and Quincy never trailed on their way to the Central Washington Athletic Conference victory.

Quincy sophomore Manny Ybarra led the Jacks offensively with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate with a double and 2 RBIs, McGuire said.

“He knocked in two runs with two outs in the first,” McGuire said.

Max Melburn went 3-for-3 at the plate for the Jacks and McGuire said Melburn is having an impressive year.

“He has hit the ball well all year,” McGuire said. “The thing that makes him so tough is that he uses the whole field. All of his hits (Tuesday) were to right field.”
