MOSES LAKE — Petunias, peppers and sweet potato vines can be purchased at Moses Lake High School.

The Moses Lake Future Farmers of America (FFA) is holding its annual plant sale Friday, from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday, from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Advisors Tony Kern and Chad Utter said proceeds benefit the students of FFA.

An estimated 10,000 plants were grown for the sale, Utter said. He said more plants, and higher quality plants will be available this year compared with last year.

“Last year we did OK, but the quality wasn’t as good because we were remodeling the greenhouse,” Utter said.

Zonal, regal and ivy geranium, bedding and cascading petunia, creeping Jenny, white and blue bacopa, and zinnia, lavender scaevola are some of the plants available to purchase.

Some shade plants, like diascias and torenias, will be sold.

“Most of our plants are good in full sun,” Utter said.

Verbena is a new addition to the sale this year.

The school is also growing plants for the city pots, Kern noted.

“This year, we’re raising all of the plants and we’re going to plant those,” he said.

Moses Lake High School student Karena Blethen, 18, said the class is fun.

“We get to hang out here and work with plants all day,” Blethen said.

Alyssa Davis, 15, said the greenhouse is full of fresh oxygen and peaceful.

“Baby plants give off a whole lot of oxygen,” Davis said.

Stephen Musa, 17, said watching the plants grow from tiny plugs to full size plants has been amazing.

“It’s like watching a baby grow,” Musa said.

Plants can be purchased after the sale by calling 509-766-2666, ext. 2837 or 2941.
