Moses Lake sweeps Pasco to stay in first place

MOSES LAKE — The Moses Lake Chiefs girls softball team cruised past the visiting Pasco Bulldogs in their doubleheader Friday afternoon to stay atop the Columbia Basin Big Nine’s Columbia Division.

Moses Lake junior pitcher Karly Stoltman struck out a total of 18 batters, including 10 in the Chiefs’ 10-0 win in game one to lead Moses Lake. Stoltman struck out eight in game two to help the Chiefs hold on to a 6-1 victory and the sweep.

Moses Lake head coach Dave Gregory said he was impressed with his team’s performance against Pasco.

“I think we played very well,” he said.

The Chiefs jumped on the Bulldogs early in game one and Stoltman kept the Pasco offense guessing on her way to a one-hit shutout. Stoltman was also 2-for-4 at the plate in game one.

Jessica McIntyre helped push the Chiefs to victory with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate with 3 RBIs. Crystal Mertes of Moses Lake also went 3-for-4 at the plate in game one and Katie Martinez knocked in a pair of runs for the Chiefs.

Stoltman continued her impressive performance pitching in game two, holding the Bulldogs to just one run on four hits. Senior catcher Shelby Gonzales helped power the Chiefs in game two with a double and 2 RBIs.

With the sweep over Pasco, Moses Lake improved to 7-1 in Columbia Division play, setting up a showdown with second-place Kennewick today at Larson Playfield, Gregory said.

“The games against Kennewick are the big ones,” he said.

The Chiefs and Lions take to the diamond at 4 p.m.

Girls Softball

Ephrata 8-13, Toppenish 2-1

EPHRATA — The Ephrata girls softball team got back into the win column Saturday with a doubleheader sweep over visiting Toppenish at the Ephrata softball complex.

After falling behind 2-0 in the third inning of game one, the Tigers scored eight unanswered runs over the course of four innings to push their way past Toppenish.

Ephrata’s Skylar Lund led the way for the Tigers with a perfect 4-for-4 performance at the plate with a double and a home run. Lund also drove in a pair of runs for Ephrata and scored three to help push the Tigers past Toppenish. Kristin Winona also did damage for the Ephrata offense with a 2-for-4 performance with a double and 2 RBIs in the game one victory.

The Tigers jumped on Toppenish with three runs in the bottom of the first inning and Ephrata never looked back on their way to a 13-1 victory in game two and a sweep over their Central Washington Athletic Conference rivals.

Lund continued to stay hot in the second game, going 2-for-2 at the plate with another home run and a double for the Tigers. Lund knocked in four runs in the second game and scored a pair to help power the Tigers. Kristina Allen went 2-for-4 with 2 RBIs and two runs and Winona drove in three runs in game two for the Tigers.

River View 12-17, Royal 0-1

ROYAL CITY — The Royal girls softball team fell behind early Saturday afternoon to River View and the Knights could never recover.

River View scored in the first inning of each contest and the Knights couldn’t fight their way back.

Katrina Welinger started pitching both games for the Knights, but three errors in game one and five errors in game two proved too much for the Knights to overcome.

Moses Lake 6, Sunnyside 1

SUNNYSIDE, Wash. — Moses Lake’s Connor Lange cruised past Sunnyside’s Sven Breitrueck 6-0, 6-0 in their No. 1 singles match as the Chiefs cruised past Sunnyside 6-1 Saturday.

Moses Lake dominated their Big Nine rivals, losing just one match on their way to the victory.

Ethan Hall kept pace for the Chiefs in the No. 2 singles with a 6-2, 6-0 victory and Virgile Jannsen knocked off Anthony Rodriguez 6-0, 6-2 to give the Chiefs three wins in the first three singles. Moses Lake’s only loss came in the No. 4 singles when Moses Lake’s Connor Koreis dropped a heartbreaker to Jessie Leija 6-4, 6-4.

Moses Lake swept the doubles matches to push the Chiefs to a 6-1 victory.

Dominic Cacchiotti and Sebastian Wirtz came back from an early 6-3 loss in the first set to stop Sunnyside’s Matt Johnson and Jorge Pacheco 6-0 in the second and 6-2 in the third to claim the victory.

David Asfour and Josh Black won a pair of 6-4 sets over their Sunnyside counterparts to give the Chiefs another doubles victory. Derek Crozier and Michael Mekonen cruised past Matt Hatfield and Daniel Warrin of Sunnyside 6-3, 6-2 to complete the doubles sweep for the Chiefs.

Othello 5, East Valley 0

YAKIMA, Wash. — Othello left no doubt in a 5-0 victory over East Valley in their Central Washington Athletic Conference (CWAC) tennis match Saturday in Yakima, Wash.

T.D. Petersen and Sam Harris cruised to wins in the singles matches and the Huskies swept the doubles competition to roll to the CWAC victory. Petersen rolled past Cameron Snyder 6-2, 6-2 and Harris knocked off Dustin Martinez 6-1, 6-1 to give the Huskies a singles sweep.

Othello’s No. 1 doubles team of Judah Gowan and Ryley Peterson earned a pair of 6-3 victories to hold off East Valley’s John Olsen and Jeryn Gonzalez.

Taylor Vigneri and Max Harris held on for a 7-6(3) victory in the first set before rolling to a 6-3 decision in the second set to hold off Jacob Thiessen and Dilbar Whokar.

Othello’s Jesse Espinoza and Parker Davis knocked off Zach Vanderhoff and Austin Wilson 7-6(6), 6-3 to complete the sweep for the Huskies.

Wahluke 3, Royal 2

MATTAWA, Wash. — Royal’s Ben Singer and Angel Ledezma cruised to a victories Saturday to help the Knights sweep singles competition from Wahluke, but Royal forfeited two doubles matches and Wahluke held on for a 3-2 victory.

Singer dominated Santiago Hernandez of Wahluke 6-0, 6-0 and Ledezma knocked off Wahluke’s Juan Osorio 6-1, 6-2 to give the Knights the sweep.

Whaluke’s Jonathan Abarca and Francisco Cuevas defeated Candelario Peraza and Noah Grant of Royal 6-4, 6-2 in the first doubles and Royal forfeited the second and third doubles to give Wahluke the match victory.

Girls Tennis

Sunnyside 4, Moses Lake 3

SUNNYSIDE, Wash. — The Chiefs girls tennis team took three of four singles matches from Sunnyside Saturday but the Grizzlies swept the doubles matches from Moses Lake to claim a 4-3 victory at home.

Moses Lake’s Rachel Korth set the tone for the Chiefs in the No. 1 singles with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Sasha Castro of Sunnyside and Moses Lake No. 2 Rachel Hofstetter dispatched Cindy Gudino 6-1, 6-2 to give the Chiefs wins in the first and second singles.

Sunnyside took the third singles match when Hannah Marro managed to rally for a three-set victory over Moses Lake’s Melissa Calder 7-6(3), 4-6, 0-6.

The Chiefs took the fourth singles match when Audrey Ramsden took a pair of 6-1 sets from Sunnyside’s Janet Cuevas to give the Chiefs three singles victories in four chances.

Moses Lake struggled in the doubles matches and Sunnyside swept the Chiefs to claim a 4-3 conference victory at home.

Othello 3, East Valley 2

YAKIMA, Wash. — The Othello Huskies girls tennis team split the singles matches with East Valley Saturday afternoon and the Huskies took two of three doubles matches from the Red Devils to claim the 3-2 victory.

Othello’s Ashleigh Snyder won a three-set marathon 6-0, 6-7(4), 6-3 over Holly Grimm to give the Huskies a win in the first singles match.

East Valley pulled even in the singles when Samantha Simmons defeated Holly Taylor 6-4, 6-0.

Othello won the No. 1 doubles match when Kayla Spohr and Jadee Roylance held on for a 6-2, 7-6(3) victory over Jaime Miller and Karlee Harris

East Valley rallied in the second doubles when Apryl Sellers and Kayla Davis defeated Emily Morgan and Jody Walker 6-4, 6-4.

Othello held on in the third doubles match when Emma Hymas and Jocelyn Cantu knocked off Candace Cupples and Emma Jo Scherschligt 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 to give the Huskies a 3-2 Central Washington Athletic Conference victory.

Royal 3, Wahluke 2

MATTAWA, Wash. — The Royal girls tennis team swept the singles matches from Wahluke Saturday afternoon and Monica Sanchez and Moriah Christensen cruised to a victory in their doubles match to give the Knights a 3-2 win on the road.

Emily Hoelscher defeated Yaneli Martinez of Wahluke 6-3, 6-2 in the first singles and Bre Weisser held off Teresa Nevarez of Wahluke 7-5, 6-1 to complete the singles sweep.

The Knights dropped the first and second doubles matches when Hollie Clouse and Susann Eide fell to Wahluke 6-4, 6-0, and Chanet Stevenson and Judith Mendez fell 6-4, 7-5.

Sanchez and Christensen’s win over Abigail Cruz and Gladis Martinez 6-2, 6-0 helped power the Knights to the 3-2 victory.

HERMISTON, Ore. — The Moses Lake Chiefs boys track team capitalized on strong performances from Spencer Fackrell, Mitch Hill, Chris Richardson and the 4X100 relay team to claim third place at the Kiwanis Invitational.

Richardson cruised to a third-place finish in the 400 and took second in the long jump to help Moses Lake (55 1/2 points) leap over The Dalles-Wahtonka (54 points). Randy Koon finished fourth in the long jump

Hill won the triple jump with a leap of 42-5 3/4 and Fackrell finished third in the discus with a throw of 140-6.

The Moses Lake 4X100 team of Hill, Koon, Richardson and Jordan Wilks finished second behind Kamiakin.

HERMISTON, Ore. — The Moses Lake Chiefs girls track team held off Grandview and La Grande Saturday to finish 14th at the Kiwanis Invitational in Hermiston, Ore.

Moses Lake sophomore Magie Munoz finished fourth in the 400 and sophomore Jordan Loera finished sixth in the triple jump.
