EPHRATA — Bicycling enthusiasts from throughout the Pacific Northwest congregated in Ephrata over the weekend to take part in the annual Rage in the Sage mountain bike festival.

Riders from as far away as Hayden Lake, Idaho, made the journey to the Columbia Basin to participate in Saturday’s short-track race at the south end of Ephrata’s Oasis Park before heading to the Beezley Hills Sunday, said Rage in the Sage Coordinator Jake Maedke.

“Overall I think we were right around last year as far as participants,” he said.

More than 100 riders took to the short track Saturday and to the Beezley Burn Sunday morning for the approximately 7-mile long bike trail in the hills overlooking Ephrata, Maedke said.

“We had a lot of new trail,” he said. “It was real tight and twisty. It was rough and tough.”

Riders who participated in the professional class were eligible for cash prizes totaling $2,000 dollars, Maedke said.

“My favorite part was probably paying the pros the big money,” he said.

Russell Stevenson of Seattle finished first in the pro division. The top payout for the pro participants was $800.
