Chiefs sweep Bulldogs

PASCO, Wash. — The Moses Lake Chiefs continued their impressive run through the Columbia Basin Big Nine’s Columbia Division Friday with a sweep over the Pasco Bulldogs.

Moses Lake senior Brock Lybbert led the Chiefs on the mound in the first game as the Chiefs knocked off the Bulldogs 7-4.

The Chiefs continued to roll in the second game to earn the 11-0 victory and the doubleheader sweep.

Moses Lake senior starting pitcher Blaine Myers earned the win on the mound in game two, pitching a five-hit shutout.

The Chiefs jumped on the Bulldogs in the top of the first inning for a 2-0 lead and the Chiefs never looked back. Moses Lake added a run in the third and three more in fourth to take a 6-0 lead.

Moses Lake poured it on in the top of the fifth inning with five runs to take an 11-0 lead. The Chiefs’ offensive explosion in the fifth inning was highlighted by a three-home run from Myers. Myers finished game two with a 3-for-3 performance at the plate with 4 RBIs.

The Chiefs return to the diamond Tuesday when they travel to Kennewick, Wash., to take on the Lions in a doubleheader. The opening pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.

Central Washington Athletic Conference

Ephrata 8-6, Wapato 1-2

EPHRATA — The Ephrata Tigers baseball team capitalized on a pair of strong pitching performances from pitchers Brett Robinson and Tyson Hubbard to move into a three-way tie for second place in the Central Washington Athletic Conference (CWAC) standings.

The Tigers scored four runs in the bottom of the third and added four more in the bottom of the fourth for an 8-1 lead. Robinson held the Wolves to just five hits to earn the win.

With Hubbard on the mound in the second game of the doubleheader. The Tigers pounced on Wapato early and held on for a 6-2 victory and a series sweep. Ephrata scored two runs in the first, added another in the second and put up three in the third to jump Wapato 6-0 early. Wapato managed a run in the fourth and a run in the fifth, but the Wolves could not get closer and Ephrata improved to 11-4 in CWAC play.

East Valley 14-12, Quincy 1-4

QUINCY — The Quincy Jackrabbits jumped on the East Valley Red Devils early in game one of Saturday’s doubleheader, but the Red Devils rallied for a series sweep in Quincy.

Quincy scored one run on seven hits in game one’s 14-1 loss.

The Jackrabbits began game two in a 4-0 hole early and Quincy couldn’t dig themselves out as East Valley capitalized on eight Quincy errors to roll to a 12-4 victory.

Othello 12-10, Ellensburg 18-8

OTHELLO — The Othello Huskies remained in a three-way tie for second place in the Central Washington Athletic Conference (CWAC) baseball standings Saturday with a doubleheader split with the visiting Ellensburg Bulldogs.

The Huskies dropped the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader 18-12 before rebounding in game two behind the right arm of Othello senior pitcher Marc Garza.

Othello overcame a slow start in the second game to hold on for the 10-8 win. The Huskies surrendered five runs in the top of the first inning before Garza settled down to earn the victory, striking out eight Bulldogs in the process.

While Garza kept the Bulldogs off balance on the mound, Lee Gomez powered the Othello offense. Gomez drove in three runs while going 2-for-3 at the plate.

South Central Athletic Conference

River View 21-15, Royal 3-3

ROYAL CITY — The Royal Knights fell behind early Saturday against South Central Athletic Conference rival River View Saturday and the Knights couldn’t recover as River View earned the doubleheader sweep.

The Knights gave up a pair of grand slams in the top of the first inning of game one and the Knights never recovered as River View cruised to a 21-3 victory in game one.

River View continued to roll in game two, scoring three runs in each of the first three innings to jump on Royal for a 15-3 victory.

Connell 7-12, Warden 1-10

WARDEN — The Warden Cougars boys baseball team couldn’t fend off the Eagles Saturday as Connell earned a South Central Athletic Conference doubleheader sweep.

The Eagles managed to capitalize on two big innings Saturday to get past the Cougars. Connell scored five runs in the third inning of game one and seven runs in the sixth inning of game two to doom the Cougars.

Warden’s Jesse Guerra led the Cougars at the plate in the series opener with a 2-for-3 performance with a double. Guerra scored Warden’s lone run in game one.

The Cougars jumped on the Eagles in the second game, but Connell scored seven in the sixth to fight their way past Warden 12-10 in game two.
