Hugh Ramsey Lyerly

| April 23, 2009 9:00 PM

Hugh Ramsey Lyerly, 88, of Ephrata, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 18, 2009, at Samaritan Hospital in Moses Lake.

He was born on April 20, 1920, in Cleveland, N.C.

Hugh was “everyone’s friend.” It was not uncommon to find a stranger Hugh had just met that morning — someone a little down on their luck — sitting with Hugh sharing a fresh pot of coffee.

He was known for his frequent appearances as Santa for family gatherings and neighborhood visits, and had a penchant for anything sweet. His love for food was complemented by his beloved wife, Nenita’s, amazing cooking skills.

Hugh served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, and managed the Troutlodge Fish Harchery during the 1970s and 1980s.

He was an accomplished fish biologist and shared his wealth of knowledge with all who would listen.

Hugh is survived by his wife of nearly 23 years, Nenita; a brother, Carl Lyerly; a sister, Jean Armstrong; two sons, Michael and Robert; a daughter, Garnette Kluttz; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by sisters, Jane Pence, Helen Camble and Ruby Kennedy; and brothers, R. J. Lyerly, Keith Lyerly, Cecil Lyerly and Wayne Lyerly.

Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. on Thursday, April 23, at Benson Funeral Services in Moses Lake. A reception follows at Jamison’s Event Center in Moses Lake. Benson Funeral Services of Moses Lake is in charge of arrangements.
