SELAH, Wash. — The Ephrata Tigers traveled to Selah Saturday to take on the Vikings in a doubleheader baseball contest with first place in the Central Washington Athletic Conference (CWAC) at stake.

The Vikings ultimately won the battle Saturday, sweeping the doubleheader from previously unbeaten Ephrata. Ephrata fell to 6-2 in CWAC play and 7-2 overall with the loss.

The Tigers jumped on the Vikings early with a run in the top of the first for a 1-0 advantage. Selah responded in the bottom of the first to tie the game before the Vikings rallied in the third.

Selah’s Matt Snider led a five-run Vikings rally in the third inning with a 3-run, bases-clearing double.

Ephrata managed to get a pair back in the top of the fourth, but Trevor Dallman of Selah hit a 3-run double of his own in the fourth inning to break it open for Selah. The Vikings added a run in the sixth inning to activate the 10-run mercy-rule victory to start the doubleheader.

The battle between the CWAC unbeatens was a one-sided affair with the Selah Vikings posting an impressive doubleheader sweep of Ephrata on Saturday at Carlon Park.

After the Tigers dropped their first game of the season to start the doubleheader, Ephrata couldn’t get back on track in the second.

Selah jumped on the Tigers early and Ephrata fell in game two 10-2. It was their second loss of the season.

Ephrata returns to the diamond Tuesday when they travel to Ellensburg to take on the Bulldogs at 4 p.m.

Goldendale 23-12, Royal 5-7

ROYAL CITY — The Royal baseball team couldn’t overcome an explosive Goldendale team and the Knights dropped a pair of home games over the weekend.

After managing to keep Goldendale off of the scoreboard for two innings to start game one of the doubleheader, the Timberwolves took a commanding lead midway through the contest with an 11-run third inning.

The Knights fought their way back in the home-half of the third, to cut the lead to 11-3. However, the Timberwolves scored three runs of their own in the top of the fourth to regain the double-digit advantage.

The Knights closed the deficit to single digits in the bottom of the fourth, but the Timberwolves scored nine in the top of the fifth and Royal never recovered and Goldendale took game one 23-5.

Following a decisive victory in game one, the Goldendale offense picked up right where it left off in game two. The Timberwolves jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in the first inning. The Knights battled back in the bottom of the first to cut the advantage to 5-2. Royal kept Goldendale off of the scoreboard in the second and third innings before scoring five runs in the top of the fourth.

The Knights scored runs in each of the last three innings, but it wasn’t enough to overtake the Timberwolves.

Royal senior Connor Paysse led the Knights in game two, finishing the contest 2-for-3 with a triple and a 2-run home run for the Knights.

Girls Fastpitch Softball

Ellensburg 14-11, Ephrata 0-0

ELLENSBURG, Wash. — The Ephrata fastpitch softball team got off to a slow start Saturday against Ellensburg and the Tigers could never recover as they dropped a pair of games to the Bulldogs.

Ellensburg pitchers Sarah McNamee and Jessica Harris each threw no-hitters to push the Bulldogs to the victory. McNamee won the first game 14-0 and Harris won the second 11-0. Both games were shortened because of the mercy rule. If either team is leading by 10 or more runs after the fifth inning, the game is over.

Boys Soccer

Southridge 2, Moses Lake 0

KENNEWICK, Wash. — The Moses Lake boys soccer team battled through the loss of five starters Saturday, but in the end depth hurt the Chiefs in a 2-0 Columbia Basin Big Nine loss to the Southridge Suns.

Moses Lake played with Southridge for the better part of Saturday’s conference contest before injuries caught up with the Chiefs, said Moses Lake head coach Bill Bertram.

“By the end of the game we had five starters out with injuries or illness,” he said. “(We’re) not very deep in terms of our line-up. We had to patch things up as we go.”

The Chiefs host Davis Tuesday night at Lions Field.

Selah 4, Ephrata 1

SELAH, Wash. — The Selah Vikings earned their first Central Washington Athletic Conference victory of the season Saturday with 4-1 win over the visiting Ephrata Tigers.

The Vikings jumped out to a 1-0 lead when Selah’s Chris Lyon found to back of the net just four minutes into the contest and four different Vikings scored in the victory.

Ephrata’s lone score came in the 33rd minute of the first half on goal from Ramon Sanchez. Ephrata goalie Jordan Hursct stopped seven Selah shots in the loss.
