Big Bend overcomes first game loss

MOSES LAKE - The Big Bend Community College Lady Vikings rebounded from a game one loss to defeat the Lady Yaks of Yakima Valley Community College in four games.

Yakima Valley stopped Big Bend 25-19 in the first game before the Lady Vikings rallied to take three straight games at home to win the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges (NWAACC) East Region match.

The victory gave the Lady Vikings their first East Region victory of the season as Big Bend improved to 1-2 in league play and 4-10 overall.

Big Bend head coach Mike De Hoog said his team got off to lethargic start Wednesday night."

"We started out a little bit flat," he said. "We got better and better, and got momentum. Volleyball is a game of momentum."

While the Lady Vikings won the match, De Hoog said his team needs to focus on the court.

"We got caught watching a little bit during the match," he said. "We don't play well when we are watching."

De Hoog said his team is coming together and becoming more confident this season.

"We are finally getting to the point where we are starting to expect wins versus us kind of hoping to win," he said. "That is a big difference confidence wise and (we are) really believing in ourselves."

Ali Walen led the Big Bend attack with 16 kills and Natalie Lindley had 37 assists for the Lady Vikings.

Defensively the Lady Vikings played well with Walen leading the way with 16 digs. Jhenesis Garza and Paula Robinson-Blumel each had 12 digs and Rae Smith led the Lady Vikings at the net with five blocks.

The Lady Vikings return to action Friday night when they travel to the Community Colleges of Spokane to take on the Lady Sasquatch
