Moses Lake tops Kamiakan
Chiefs 121
Braves 62
MOSES LAKE - The Moses Lake Chiefs girls swim and dive team remained perfect in 2008 following their victory Saturday over the Kamiakan Braves.
The 121-62 victory gave the Chiefs a 2-0 record and a tie for first place in the Columbia Basin League.
Natalie Ruiz of Othello swam to two state qualifying times in the 200-meter individual medley and in the 500-meter freestyle events. Ruiz attends Othello High School but competes with the Moses Lake Chiefs because the Huskies do not have a swimming program.
Ruiz has swam four state qualifying times this season while swimming with Moses Lake.
Moses Lake head coach Tony St. Onge said he is impressed with Ruiz so far.
"Rarely is a swimmer able to qualify in all eight individual events for state," he said. "She has a good possibility of accomplishing this feat."
The Chiefs are impressive this season and St. Onge credits his captains Megan Schuh, Cari Cortez, Hannah Grigg and Heather Devine.
"(They) are the hardest workers and most enthusiastic members of this team," he said. "The make coaching much easier and give us time to focus on practice performance."
