OTHELLO - The Othello Huskies hosted conference rival and defending 2A Washington state football champion Prosser Mustangs Friday night in a game with possible playoff implications.

Going into the contest, both teams shared a 2-0 record and a share of the Central Washington Athletic Conference lead.

The game saw the Mustangs soundly defeat the hometown Huskies 54-21. The loss dropped the Huskies into second place in the conference.

The Mustangs had 490 yards of total offense and scored on their first possession.

Othello responded on it's first possession by scoring on a 80-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Marc Garza.

The formidable Mustang defense stepped up their play and shut out the Huskies for the remainder of the game's first half.

Prosser went on to score four more first-half touchdowns. The Mustangs missed an extra point attempt and held 33-7 halftime lead over Othello.

The Huskies came out in the second half fired up and scored 14 second-half points, but Othello's defense couldn't hold back the Mustangs as Prosser added 21 more points in the second half for a 44-21 conference victory.

Former Huskies standout and 2007 graduate Courtney Kirkwood was presented the 2007 Gatorade Athletic Achievement award at halftime.

This was the second time Kirkwood won the award.

The Huskies travel to Toppenish Friday night.
