Local BMXers represent Columbia Basin
SUMNER - Last weekend the Desert Sun BMX club took 17 Columbia Basin riders to the Washington state BMX championships in Sumner.
Of the 17 local participants at the state championships, two brought home first place finishes. Guy Rutherford took first place in the 13-year-old cruiser division and Misty Rutherford won the 16-year-old girls division.
Moses Lake Track Operator Sunshine Rutherford said she was excited with the performance by the riders this year.
"This is our third year competing," she said. "The first year we only had one rider, Guy Rutherford. This year we took 17."
Participating riders must fill out an application to participate for the Desert Sun BMX Club, Rutherford said.
"It isn't about riding ability," she said. "It's about sportsmanship. Everyone of the riders must do 10 hours of community service to participate."
The Desert Sun BMX Club had strong performances from the riders competing in the 9-year-old Boys division. The club took three riders, each placing in the top 10.
Rutherford said she is proud she number of participants for the Desert Sun BMX Club riders grow in recent years.
"Four years ago there weren't any (participants)," she said. "It is amazing to see the growth of the sport in Moses Lake."
