Moses Lake celebrates new Lions Field

MOSES LAKE - More than 2,000 Moses Lake High School students and staff filed into Lions Field Friday for an assembly and ribbon-cutting ceremony.

The Moses Lake football team's first home game took place the same evening at the freshly renovated stadium, which holds up to 3,000 people.

Renovations include Field Turf, bleachers, a press box, concessions building and restrooms. The project was funded through the sale of voter-approved bonds.

"Especially for (Friday's) game, I know that the kids are going to be excited, and it's something they've been looking forward to," said Defensive Coordinator Todd Griffith.

Griffith said the team practiced on the turf during the summer.

"I'm hoping that it's going to give them a sense of pride … that every time they walk in this stadium and put that gear on, and walk outside those doors, that they know they come out here and they're going to do their best and play their hardest for our community," he said.

Moses Lake School Board member Vicki Groff cut the ribbon on the new field, as Assistant Superintendent of Business & Operations Monte Redal stood beside her.

"On behalf of the Moses Lake School District Board of Directors, and as an alumnus of Moses Lake High School, I want to recognize Coach (Greg) Kittrell and Loren Sandhop for their vision, and the taxpayers for their votes to loan us the money to make this a first-class stadium," Groff said. "Go Cheifs!"

Students at the assembly watched the football team score a touchdown and were entertained by the Moses Lake High School band, cheerleaders and drill team.
