9/11 ceremony set in Moses Lake
Event to remember attacks, lives lost
MOSES LAKE - The public is invited to a memorial ceremony on Patriot Day to remember the terrorist attacks conducted Sept. 11, 2001.
The ceremony begins at 5:46 a.m. Thursday in Civic Center Park at the memorial site, Fire Chief Tom Taylor said. The time was chosen because it was when the first Fire Department of New York and New York Police Department personnel were dispatched to the World Trade Center towers in Pacific Standard Time after the first airplane struck one of the towers.
The fire department and the police department participated in the ceremony since the first anniversary of the attack, he said.
Grant County Fire District No. 5 personnel also attend the event.
Bells are rung during the ceremony signifying various alarms sounded during the attack calling for more manpower and indicating each catastrophe.
On Sept. 11, 2001, two airplanes were intentionally flown into the World Trade Center towers. A third airplane struck the Pentagon.
A fourth airplane was headed toward Washington, D.C., but was taken off course by passengers who attempted to overpower al-Qaida hijackers onboard the airplane. The airplane crash-landed in Pennsylvania. More than 2,000 people died including airplane passengers, firefighters, law enforcement, volunteers and civilians.
