Lady Vikings fall in three games

MOSES LAKE - The Big Bend Community College Lady Vikings volleyball team could not stop the visiting Community Colleges of Spokane Lady Sasquatch Wednesday night.

The Lady Sasquatch capitalized on a close 25-22 victory in game one to distance themselves from Big Bend and sweep the Lady Vikings in three games.

Big Bend fell in game two 25-14 and lost game three 25-12.

The three-point loss in game one was frustrating for the Lady Vikings, said Big Bend head volleyball coach Mike De Hoog after Wednesday night's loss.

"We came out and spotted them five points right off the bat," he said. "We ended up losing by three points and we were up 22-20. They scored five unanswered points on us."

After his team dropped a heartbreaking game one, De Hoog said it was difficult for his team to recover.

"We are playing a little bit tentative at the very end of games," he said.

Big Bend was prepared for the Lady Sasquatch attack, but De Hoog said his team shifted away from their game plan.

"We knew what their attackers do and we knew our blocking scheme," he said. "We didn't stick with it. We kind of got away from our game plan."

With the loss Wednesday night, the Lady Vikings have three games remaining on their schedule and De Hoog said his team needs to focus.

"We need to comeback and keep plugging away and try and stay strong in our last three matches," he said.

While Big Bend's season has not progressed the way De Hoog had hoped, he said he has seen bright moments from his team.

"We do some things good, just not enough of the time," he said. "When we stick with our schemes we do well."

Despite the three-game sweep, De Hoog is confident in his team's ability.

"The girls need to stay confident and believe in themselves," he said. "We need to have self-confidence when the deck is stacked against us."

Big Bend will rebound from Wednesday night's loss De Hoog said when his team travels to Blue Mountain Community College on Nov. 5.

"We didn't play our best tonight," he said. "We need to come back tomorrow and plug away and get ready for the next one."

Big Bend's Jhenesis Garza led the Lady Vikings with five kills and 14 digs.

Rae Smith had four kills and 10 digs in the loss for Big Bend and Natalie Lindley led the Lady Vikings with 18 assists.

Big Bend's next two matches are on the road before the Lady Vikings return to Moses Lake for their final home match of the season.

The Lady Vikings host the Columbia Basin Community College Lady Hawks Wed. Nov. 12.

The match is scheduled to begin 6 p.m.
