Lady Lions claw way to victory
MLCA 10-1 in league play
EASTON - With the North Central Washington 1B league title already wrapped up, Moses Lake Christian swept league foe Easton on the road Tuesday night.
The Moses Lake Christian Lady Lions capitalized on a 25-8 first game victory to defeat the Easton Jaguars in three straight games to earn the league victory.
The Lady Lions won the second game 25-14 and completed the sweep with a 25-18 win in game three.
Moses Lake Christian head coach Dean Spurbeck said his team is playing great at the end of the season.
"We are peaking at the right time of the season," he said. "It is definitely better to be playing our best volleyball at the end of the season. At the start of the season you are teaching them how to play at the end of the season."
With Moses Lake Christian having clinched the league championship last week, Spurbeck said his whole team was able to play Tuesday night.
"I got to play a lot of our reserves," he said. "Abby Garrett played great tonight. She hit really well from the left side. It's nice to see some of the younger players doing well."
Moses Lake Christian senior Esther Timofeyev led the Lady Lions attack with 28 kills. Kaylee Firouzi led Moses Lake Christian with 33 assists.
Sophomore Kristina Firouzi had 11 assists and sophomore Melissa Verhage had 10 kills in the victory.
Spurbeck said his team's offense is coming around.
"Our passing is improving a lot," he said. "If you don't pass well you can't run your offense and the setters can't get balls out to the hitters."
While Moses Lake Christian earned the victory, Spurbeck said his team still has room for improvement.
"One of the things we have to work on is not slacking at the end of games and finish them off," he said. "We get complacent at times. We are working on scoring every point, every time, no matter who we play."
Moses Lake Christian wraps up their regular season Thursday night when the host Mansfield. Game time is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
