Chiefs sweep dual swim meet
Moses Lake sits in third place
MOSES LAKE - The Moses Lake Chiefs swim team improved to 8-2 in the Eastern Washington Swim League and 9-2 overall following wins over Richland and Hanford Saturday afternoon.
The Chiefs completed the sweep at the dual swim meet following a 98-87 win over Hanford and a 109-77 win over Richland.
Moses Lake head coach Tony St. Onge was impressed with his team's performance.
"We swam tough after a week of grueling workouts," he said. "We are mainly focusing on districts and these dual meets are mostly a time test, as well as the opportunity to race."
The Chiefs have 10 swimmers who have qualified for districts.
Moses Lake divers Heather Devine, Sammy Hendrickson and Teal Dyles have also qualified for districts.
St. Onge said the Moses Lake diving program is improving thanks to dedication from its participants and coaches.
"Moses Lake is coming on strong in diving," he said. "This is attributed to hard work on the divers part and coach Kris Hendrickson's commitment to the sport."
Othello High School student Natalie Ruiz competes with the Moses Lake Chiefs because Othello does not have a swimming program.
Ruiz improved her state-leading times in the 50-yard freestyle and the 100-yard backstroke.
Ephrata's Kaitlyn Knitter also qualified for districts in the 200-yard freestyle, 100-yard freestyle and the 100-yard breastroke.
